MOZGIS: Transforming Resource Management in Mozambique

MOZGIS is a transformative project by XELTIS LTD, focused on empowering Mozambique's resource sector through innovative geological information systems (GIS). Launched in 2021, MOZGIS aims to create a comprehensive digital framework for mapping, monitoring, and managing the country’s vast mineral resources, with a particular emphasis on sustainability and community development. By combining GIS technology, AI analytics, and local expertise, MOZGIS provides a powerful tool for stakeholders to make informed decisions about resource extraction while prioritizing environmental preservation and social equity.

The MOZGIS project was born out of a need to address the challenges faced by Mozambique’s mining industry, including illegal mining, environmental degradation, and lack of transparency. XELTIS partnered with local governments and communities to develop a system that maps mineral deposits with high accuracy, monitors mining activities in real-time, and ensures compliance with environmental regulations. In its first year, MOZGIS mapped over 50 mineral-rich sites in Mozambique, identifying resources like graphite and gemstones worth $300K, while supporting 3,000 locals with training and job opportunities.

At the core of MOZGIS is its advanced GIS platform, which integrates satellite data, drone surveys, and on-the-ground geological assessments to create detailed resource maps. The system uses AI to analyze this data, predicting mineral locations and assessing their economic viability. MOZGIS also includes a real-time monitoring component that tracks mining activities, ensuring that operations adhere to sustainable practices. This has significantly reduced illegal mining in the region, fostering trust between local communities, governments, and mining companies.

Beyond its technological impact, MOZGIS is deeply committed to community empowerment. The project has established training programs for local geologists and miners, equipping them with the skills to use GIS technology effectively. In 2022, MOZGIS expanded its reach to include educational initiatives, partnering with schools in Mozambique to teach students about sustainable mining practices. As XELTIS looks to the future, MOZGIS will continue to play a pivotal role in transforming Mozambique’s resource sector, paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
